Here is the August Newsletter form the Forest Lake County Store in Land O Lakes Wisconsin. What a great place to visit now with all the heat we're getting here in Chicago. I'd love to be back up north again.. But it wont' be long, I'll be up there for fall muskie fishing and maybe a little bit of grouse hunting. We'll see about that.
So sit back, relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, and the August news from the Northwoods...
Forest Lake Country Store August Newsletter
Great food and a whole lot more,,,
Jimmy Buffet lyrics about tourists covered in oil keep ringing through the north woods. Not sure if the radio stations play it on purpose or if we just notice it more with the great weather we are having this summer.
A quick ride around the “neighborhood” shows a lot more than tourists. Take some time to look at just how many shades of green you can see. Crayola could take some lessons in color development here. There is one shade of green for the balsams, and another for the spruces. The popple’s have another and the maples, oaks and ash leaves all have their individual shade of green. Now look at the ferns, then the raspberry bushes, and every other shrub or tree. Each has their own shade of green. This is a visual cacophony of shades of green! Vibrant. Loud. Subdued. Muted. You will find it all with a short walk in the woods.
Summer has been glorious in more than color. We continue to be impressed by the generations of families that come to the north woods. The family cabin is the “new” cool place to be with your family. We are happy to have so many stop in for an ice cream, a sandwich or with any luck a pizza. We thank you in advance for sharing your family with us. We have been here 5 years at the end of June. Kids are coming in for a cone this year that were in baby carriers the first year. Others that were not in high school are now packing up and heading to college! The north woods gives us a front row seat for the changes of the season, and also the changes in the families.
New in the Store
We are back in stock on the Baby Rice and Ladyfinger gourmet popcorn. These are hull-less popcorns that are a real treat to pop and eat. When we have inventory these sell fast.
Look for Blueberry Crush in the soda Cooler. We all grew up with Orange Crush. Now there is a new kid in the Crush family. Give this a test ride. There is also a couple new lemonades.
In the beer cooler look for some new things. From Lakefront Brewery we have a 4 pack assortment. Not your usual 4 pack these are giant 20 ounce bottles packed one each of India Black Ale (IBA), Bridge Burner, Fixed Gear Red Ale and Rondevous a French style ale. Each 4 pack is its own private tasting party waiting to happen on your deck or pontoon boat. Also from Lakefront is The Big Easy Maibock, this is the end of this summer seasonal. From Sand Creek we have Groovy Brew in psychedelic bottles and carrier, this is a German Kolsch style Lager. We have also expanded our selection to include Sierra Nevada Pale ale and 3 more varieties to arrive this week. Of course we still have 20 something Sprechers and over 100 different beers. We also have a sign up for a Leinenkugel Neon. Stop at the store and fill out a drawing certificate to enter the drawing, you might drive home in a new car!
We keep talking about the Land O’ Lakes history books. They continue to sell and people love them. This is a pictorial history, with expanded captions on each picture. Once the first one is purchased, family members come in and buy more. We have some left, stop in before they are gone!
At the Country Store we always look for a great quality to price value and have found a couple that fill the bill. Both are from Bluefish Wines. Made in southwest Germany the climate is perfect for growing perfect Riesling grapes.
Here is information about each wine:
Blue Fish Riesling
Color: Delicate gold with pale green reflections
Aroma: Seductive perfume of ripe apricot and peaches
Taste: Dry and harmonious with a pleasing structure and underlying acidity
Serve lightly chilled. Blue Fish Riesling is a sublime match with fish dishes, risottos, creamy pasta dishes, sushi platters and Asian-inspired cuisine.
Bluefish Sweet Riesling
Color: Soft gold with green reflections
Aroma: Seductive perfume of fresh apricot, peaches, and ripe pineapple
Taste: Fruity sweetness with a full-bodied structure and refreshing acidity
Serve lightly chilled. Blue Fish Sweet Riesling complements the flavor of shellfish, mussels, Asian-inspired cuisine, and mild cheeses. The wine is also perfect for sipping on its own while enjoying a warm summer night.
Normally these wines sell for about $9.99 - $10.99 per bottle. We are taking advantage of this early order opportunity and will offer a special price of just $7.99 per bottle for full case orders. You can choose a case of one or the other, choose a case or two of each, or we will split a case for you, 6 bottles of each Riesling.
We will need orders by Friday July 29th. Wine will arrive about the tenth of August. You can let us know by email or stop in the store to order your wine
