A newsletter from the Northwoods

Here's the latest newsletter from our friends in the Northwoods.   I can't wait.  In December, I'm heading up north for a few days for a Christmas Party and some ice fishing.  I've always wanted to spend some time in the Northwoods at Christmas time.  Finally, the time has come...

"Forest Lake Country Store - Great food and a whole lot more

We finally had our first real snowfall.  It came in time for deer season.  Not a lot of snow, but a nice white blanket.  Do not think of thick down quilt, more like a surplus wool blanket covering the woods.   It gave the woods a new depth, easy to see the animals as they make their final preparations for winter.  A red squirrel with a mouthful of dry fern to stuff in that last crevasse of its winter nest.  A grouse scurrying, from the sanctuary of one small spruce tree to the crown of a balsam tree tipped over in the wind storm.

Along with the snow, the big lakes received a thin armor plate of ice in sheltered bays.  Smaller lakes are frozen over.  The first glimpse of Wood Lake, behind the store, with a hard shell is always impressive.  One day the lake is soft, the next day it is hard from shore to shore.

New in the Store

We talked about our success with dry soups in previous newsletters.  Recently we received these new soups: Creamy wild rice and asparagus, Cream of wild rice, Wild rice- leek and potato, Cheesy vegetable chowder and Northwood's hearty chili.  Another new item is a Wild rice and cranberry pilaf; a great side dish for your holiday meals!

New in the beer cooler is the Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale.  Their holiday beer is very difficult to find and incredible to drink.  We received just a couple cases.  This IPA is brewed especially for the Holiday Season.  We also expect a case of the Sprecher Winter Brew this week.  This is an award winning Munich style Dunkel bock.  It is hard to get and will not last long.  Stop in to get it soon!

We also received another load of the Apple Riesling Salsa and the Jalapeño Cherry Butter.  This took as by surprise and we were out of stock for a short time.  The shelves are stocked again, stop by and try these products.

Here are a couple unique wines to consider for your holiday fun:  From Chateau Ste Michelle we have their Indian Wells Cabernet Sauvignon and 2007 Merlot.  The Merlot recently received a 90 rating from Wine Spectator.  Another great choice is the Trinchero 2007 Daybreak Merlot.  Also a highly rated wine, and difficult to find.  We have less than a case on the shelf.  Any of these would be a great compliment to your Holiday plans.

Also back in stock is the Ladyfinger Popcorn.  Do not confuse this gourmet popcorn with the microwave stuff.  This is the old fashion popcorn that you pop in a kettle.  This popcorn has tiny kernels and is "hull-less" as well.  When you eat this you do not get the hulls stuck between your teeth.  For an old fashion taste treat try the Ladyfinger popcorn.

Events in the Store

January 11th  Cooking Demo with Mike McAdams

Mike will share three recipes that were popular in his bistro in Sycamore Illinois.  There are two entrees and one dessert dish.  He will demonstrate how to cook the dishes.  After each dish is prepared we will present a full portion paired to a fine wine for each attendee.  Cost is just $15 per person.  Reservations are limited to just 24 people.  Stop at the store to pay for your seat or call with a credit card number to reserve seats.

Unsung Hero's

Flossie Knoth and Jean Sitzberger get some attention this month for their efforts planning the Family Fun Day last September.  There were kid's games, a pie baking competition, food refreshments and a Barn Dance.  If you missed this event this year, you want to have it on your calendar in 2011!

Flossie and Jean are not from the Chamber of Commerce.  They do not have stores/restaurants or a business that benefitted from the event.  They had a great idea and ran with it.  Not alone mind you.  They had a long list of volunteers that lent a hand.  But the brain child was theirs and they did not rest until it was done.  Their efforts make Land O' Lakes a nicer to live or visit.  If you see them down town take a minute and thank them for their effort.

News from the North Woods

The Headwaters Food Pantry is always appreciative of any canned or dry goods that can be left for their patrons.  There are drop boxes at Jensen Akins on Conover, the bank in Phelps, the Chamber of Commerce Building in Land O' Lakes and at the Forest lake Country Store.

In preparation for thanksgiving the Pantry had an all time high of 66 families that picked up food.  No gift is too small for the Pantry.  If you have a box of cereal, a couple cans of soup or bag of flour place it in one of the drop boxes.  Your actions will make someone's life brighter!
