November News from the Northwoods

My morning cup of coffee always trastes better when I get to enjoy it while reading about the news that comes from the Forest Lake Country Store in Land O Lakes Wisconsin.  Enjoy....

Forest Lake Country Store

Great food and a whole lot more,,,

November 2010

Remember, we are closed Monday November 15th to attend a food show. We will also close November 29th for store cleaning and our family holiday celebration. We will re-open Dec 21.

Winter blew in with some gusto this week. Mother Nature gave the north woods a real trimmin' this week. Steady winds of about 25 mph for what seemed like 24 hours straight. Gusts of 35, 45, maybe 55 mph. Gordon Lightfoot sang of the gales of November,,, they were a week early this year! A couple people were in and talked about the ugly time of the year. We took a drive and looked around and did not see anything ugly. We may have been moving too fast so we bundled up (remember we said winter blew in) and went for a walk. I guess in someone's opinion it could be ugly, we just saw it differently. The ferns are laid down on the ground in varying shades or brown and burgundy. There are russet oak leaves and yellow popple leaves and some crimson maple leafs all matted into the ferns. It is like a giant earth-tone quilt spread across the forest floor. The trees are pretty much naked. But now you can see into the woods. It is a completely different perspective than summer or fall. You notice a large boulder, deposited there eons ago by a glacier. Just think of where the boulder travelled before it landed there. Look over there at that tipped over pine. Almost 30" across, each growth ring marking another year standing guard over the forest. Across that ridge is a unique sight. It is a wild cherry tree with its unique bark. Never noticed it when the trees were covered with foliage and the ferns were knee high. The woods is very different, but a far cry from ugly. Go out and take a look, no doubt you will agree.

New in the Store

In the Pepsi Cooler we have added RockStar, both regular and sugar free. We have not had many energy drinks but we filled that void in our selection.

Our dried soups continue to sell well. We have many different styles and recently ordered some from Spirit Valley. They make all of our salsas and also the great spiced peaches we introduced last month. Look for different dried soups to arrive about November third or fourth.

In the salsa area we have something very different. Apple Riesling Salsa. Made with Michigan Apples and Riesling wine, this salsa is great with chips, over cream cheese or try it as a glaze on a baked chicken.

We also added a Jalapeño Cherry Butter. Spicy, sweet and savory; all at the same time. Put this on your breakfast toast, spread it on a chicken sandwich, or glaze your next pork roast. This stuff is the real deal!

In the beer cooler we have received the Winter Skaal from Capital Brewing. We also received a big shipment from Sprecher. Right now we have 15 different Sprecher beers on the shelf. We were also able to get more OctoberFest from Hacker Pschorr.

In the wine racks we received a fine Merlot from Chateau Ste Michelle. Made in the Indian Wells region, this is a great Merlot with a 90 point rating from Wine Spectator. This wine will move fast. Stop in for a bottle or three, this will not break the bank.

Last are some Christmas ideas from the Country Store. A mixed bag of salsa's, wild rice, wine and cheese makes a great gift with a North Country feel. Gift certificates are great stocking stuffers, a gift for your hairdresser, mail delivery, the kid that mows your lawn, house or pet sitter. Whoever deserves something from special from you for the holidays. They can buy breakfast, wine or ice cream. Salsa and chips, craft beer or gas in their snowmobile. Anything we sell they can ring up on their gift certificate. Remember we close in early December. If you would like to purchase some gift certificates you can stop in, or call us with a credit card and we can mail them out, or send us an email and we will get it worked out.

Unsung Heroes

This is something new this month and we think there are other candidates for future newsletters. This is apropos at this time. John Muir and Lynn Ritchie are prime candidates for recognition. They run all of the shooting events at the Gateway Lodge. (As a sidebar the Gateway Gun Club is the longest running shooting facility in the Midwest.) Sanctioned trap events are held several times each year and the events bring people to Land O' Lakes. Guests that stay in hotels, eat at restaurants, shop in the stores, and more. The shooting events pretty much stimulate the economy in Land O' Lakes for 4 day weekends several times every year. The end of the shooting season has an exclamation point in the Ruffed Grouse Championship of America. This is a three day event that includes a dog challenge, trap shooting and culminates in the Grouse Championship. Hunters from Connecticut, Florida, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and more congregate in Land O' Lakes for the event. Many are here a week in advance to scout. Last year noted shooting celebrity Tom Knaap was here and the event was featured his national outdoor television show. This year John and Lynn coerced the US Shooting Team into attending the event. At the award ceremony John and Lynn held an auction with proceeds supporting the US Shooting Team. $12,000 was raised for the Olympic hopefuls. John, Lynn and a large cadre of volunteers organize the Grouse Championship with little recognition. It is a great image event for Land O' Lakes to host a national event, 4 years in a row. It is giant for the local economy to have this many visitors at an otherwise slow time of year. If you see Lynn or John around town, please take a minute to thank them for the extra effort they expend to set Land O' Lakes apart. They are truly unsung heroes!

Events in the Store

Amanda Ryba-Nuechterlein, from Wein Bauer, will be here with Nina, to present a great cross section of the Wein Bauer portfolio. Some of their brands are Bauer Haus, Schlink Haus, Mo-Velt, Angioletta and more. A common denominator is that they are very approachable wines. Easy to drink; not big chewy, tannic wines. Slightly sweet, modestly priced, and attractively packaged. If you are entertaining for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or looking for some unique wines to use for holiday gifts, Wein-Bauer has some real crowd pleasing products. Advance reservations required! Limited to 25 people. The event is free, but limited due to space. Please call to check seating availability.

November 13th 12 Noon to 2 PM Forest Lake Country Store

Nature and wildlife photographer Kurt L. Krueger will be in the store to discuss digital photography and his recently self-published book, "A Wildlife Collection: Celebrating Wisconsin's Conservation Ethic". Over 150 breathtaking images and a history of conservation efforts of Wisconsin waters, woods and game are in the book.

These books are a great addition in any home or cabin and also make great Christmas gifts for the discriminating friends or family members. Profits from book sales during the session will be donated to the Headwaters Food Pantry. We will also accept free will donations for the Food Pantry at this session.

GOOD NEWS!

At their October 8th meeting, the Conover Town Board voted unanimously to fully fund the Engineering Study of the Little Tamarack dam, spillway, and floodplain.

There was a huge turnout of interested parties at the meeting - an estimated 100 people came to show support for the Town Board in their decision to go forward.

It will be several months before the study is complete. At that time, the report will show what is necessary to re-license the dam.

Thanks to everyone in attendance, and all of you who have supported the preservation of the Flowage. And a special thanks to the Town Board for their foresight and understanding of the importance of this project. Every taxpayer in Conover benefited from their wise decision.

November is the traditional time of thanks. We think of the obvious; our health, the devotion of a great spouse, kids that listen to advice at least occasionally. As business owners in the north we thank all of the great customers that make the country store work. You guide us into new products and services, keep a smile on your face when something we try does not always work out. You make us feel like friends and family.

We are thankful for a very loyal staff. They work hard for us, and set us apart with exemplary service and care. We are thankful for a Lord that gives us strength and compassion today and hope for better tomorrows.

Happy Thanksgiving and the best of the Christmas season to you!
