Ed McCain from Mik Lurch Tackle Outlet told me today that Burns Ditch is open for boats. The dredging project is now complete and boaters can launch and fish the discharges. You can go as far as the mouth of the ditch but not out into the lake.
Ed reports that the lake is iced up "as far as the eye can see."
With the pending weather, it could be a good week to 10 days before we can get out on the lake on a mild day.
Steelhead and Coho salmon are the catch of the day.
The top baits include spoons like Little Cleos; silver and blue or silver and green.
Another good bait is a jig with a twister tail and a piece of sliced squid. Yup! Calamari.
Go to any of the large food stores that have a fresh fish section. If they sell squid, it's usually whole. Bring it home before your trip. Cut the body of the squid into half inch by two inch strips. It's like making your own pork rind for jig n pig for bass.
Ask the butcher (is that what they call the person at the fresh fish section?) to give you the squid in a plastic container instead of wrapped in paper or in a plastic baggie. The hard container will hold your sliced squid and keep all the juices there too.
The squid is a real attractant for the jig and twister tail. I've use twister tails that are white in color. Berkley power baits are the best.
When the lake opens up and the coho move in, many guys will troll baits along the shores. This jig n squid rig fished tight along the steel walls will catch coho that have been scattered by trollers.
Give this a try. With the ditch now open, great fishing is not that far away.
