January 8, 2010 at about 12:30 PM Chicago time, the International Game Fish Association announced that Manabu Kurita of Japan has a world record largemouth bass.  It weighed 22 lbs 4 oz.

On July 2, 2009 Kurita was fishing Lake Biwa, an old reservoir with a Deps Sidwinder rod and Shimano reel loaded with 25 pound test Toray line.  His bait?  A live bluegill.

Kurita saw a big bass swimming near a piling and tossed his bait toward it.  It was only moments before the monster bass took the bait.  The three minute fight may have seemed like forever, but it was not as long as it took to get the fish in the record books.

Kurita's fish ties the current record held by George Perry who caugh his fish from Montgomery Lake in Georgia on June 2, 1932.
