How to Stay Happy Joyous and Free During the Holidays as a Sober Person

Because I’m an alcoholic and always will be, I would really like to be able to drink at these holiday parties I’m going to in the coming weeks. But what happens then?  I fall into the Christmas tree.  It’s happened. TWICE.  Two separate years yours truly fell drunkenly into the company Christmas tree.  It’s really... Read more »

On Days When Sobriety is REALLY HARD

You know the days.  They don’t have to be anything monumentally terrible. They always say, “it’s a broken shoe lace that will get you”, meaning, it’s the little things. It’s not somebody dying or being diagnosed with a terrible disease necessarily that causes us to fall off the rails. I’ve been doing this a while... Read more »

Sunday Night Blues

I don’t mind Mondays.  It’s not that.  I quite like Mondays.  For I am a seeker of order and schedules and organization.  Once Monday arrives, I am usually quite content to greet the day and get back to work. However, the Sundays that come before the Mondays.  They are the pits. The Sunday Night Blues.... Read more »

On Sobriety after 13 years

October 4, 2001 is my sobriety date.  It took several attempts to get here and even more attempts to stay here.  And I’m still not done, for each day I get up and I make the decision that I still want to be sober and I do what’s necessary to stay that way. Back then... Read more »

You looked kind of drunk

“You looked kind of drunk in that picture you sent me last night.” My husband casually said that the next day and I didn’t think anything of it. Kind of laughed it off.  Until we were out for a walk with our twin toddlers and it hit me. “Did you seriously think I was drinking... Read more »

I am the sober mom

It would seem I’m in the minority.  It would seem I am alone in the sea of cute bedazzled wine glasses and happy hours with pedicured feet, beer cozies and a pool view. I am the sober mom.  I am a mom and I don’t drink.  I am the mom who CANNOT drink.  For you... Read more »

10 Great Things about NOT Drinking

There are plenty of us out here who aren’t drinking these days.  You might be pregnant.  You might be supporting a partner who’s pregnant.  You might be sick.  You might be allergic.  You might just not want to drink – HOW DARE YOU.  Contrary to popular belief, most of us who don’t drink are not... Easy does it

Long term sobriety is a marathon, not a sprint.  That’s as close to a running metaphor as you’ll ever hear me spout.  I’ve got a few 24 hours going here, but at times it can feel as though I’m just starting out.  Fumbling, clawing, grasping for calm, cool and collected.  Groping for the wisdom to... 10 Ways Toddlers are Just like Tiny Alcoholics

I’m a recovering alcoholic.  I have two toddlers.  My world is pretty much full of drunks (both active and sober) and toddlers and I find this oddly comforting as they’re my favorites. Have you ever said no to an alcoholic?  Saying no to a toddler is oddly similar.  Neither cares for the word “no” very... Read more »

Being Sober and Taking a Drink is NOT the End

I don’t like the “r” word.  This word rehabs (another “r” word) want us to use is “relapse”.  I hate that word and I hate the notion that everybody relapses.  They don’t.  They don’t have to.  It’s not part of sobriety or recovery.  It’s not.  Let’s call it what it is, if you are sober... When my husband and I were desperately trying to have a baby, I kept wishing I would just happen upon a baby. Therefore, "I Want a Dumpster Baby" blog was born. All babies are precious and worthy of so much love! I'm a grateful drunk who doesn't drink, a smoker who doesn't smoke and a mom of boy/girl twins from IVF (the devil science brought us babies made of hope, love and science) born January 7th, 2013. Now the blog is called "I Got a Dumpster Family!" because, well, I did. I work as a Big Shot (aka Admin) in a full time job that I love and I'm grateful for the good the bad and the ugly. If life were fair, I would be dead, and I would miss this life beyond my wildest dreams. It's a great day to be alive!
