If Life Were Fair, I Would Be Dead

Happiness is not our right. We don't have the right to happiness. Stop believing that. Just stop it. We have to work at happiness. It doesn't just happen. I'm so damn tired of entitlement and people thinking they are owed something by life just by existing. Do some damn work, already. People mope around and act all sad and wonder why their life sucks so badly, when really?  You've got everything you could ever possibly need or want at your disposal and you just want to whine and cry about what you DON'T have.  People would give anything to have the privileges that so many of us take for granted.

TRY GRATITUDE.  It works in amazing ways.  Make a list of everything you are grateful for in your life right at this moment, because I bet there is a lot to be grateful for if you really take it back to basics.

  1. I am alive.
  2. I am sober.
  3. I have a roof over my head.
  4. I have people and animals I love and who love me back.
  5. Those people and animals I love are healthy.
  6. I am healthy - in mind and body.
  7. I have gainful employment.
  8. I have good food to eat and clean water to drink.

WHAT IN THE WORLD ELSE COULD I POSSIBLY NEED?  After number 1, I am golden.  After that, it's all cake as I've been without everything else on that list and it was hell.

Happiness is a choice.  It is something that doesn't come naturally to me.  My natural instinct is often to go negative.  To complain about something.  So I have to - in that moment - decide where I'm going to take that line of thinking.  I make a choice to sulk or to be happy in what I have and where I am in that very moment.

Just because I exist does not mean I am owed anything.  If Life Were Fair, I Would Be Dead.  That is a solid truth. I put myself in horrible situations while drinking that should have killed me.  But they didn't.  There are plenty of really good people who I think, deserve to be here more than I do, BUT THEY ARE NOT.  They were taken due to any number of things.  The fact that I'm still here is something I don't take lightly.   I received a second chance and I choose to not waste it on trivial bullshit.

You know what's not fair?  Famine and war.  People and animals dying of terrible causes.  You know what's completely fair?  That I haven't bought any shoes in a good long time and most likely will not for say, the next 20 years so that I have more money for kid type stuff.

It grinds my gears to see and hear entitlement and unfortunately it's all around us, constantly.  Especially in this country where so many people are facing TERRIBLE obstacles on one side and then people like the Kardashians are who people "look up to" as far as "making it" in life and in entertainment.  DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED.

Did I mention?

"I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

Just for a moment, pause and be grateful for what you have and where you are.  I bet you're feeling better already.  I know I am.

I'm a grateful drunk who doesn't drink (sobriety date 10/4/2001), a smoker who doesn't smoke and a mom of boy/girl twins from IVF born 1/7/13. I'm grateful for the good the bad and the ugly. It's great to be alive!
