Christmas Around the Corner...

It seems like Christmas is around the corner: just three weeks after Halloween, stores try to outdo each other in a race to grab our attention (and dollars) for the biggest shopping holiday of the year; as if to "skip over" over Thanksgiving and go straight to Dec. 25th ....

Before we knew it, we turn our clocks back one hour, and turn our heads toward appealing store - front windows. With Christmas music already on the radio, holiday movies on T.V., and Santa Claus pre-occupying our plans . But what's the rush ? I started looking forward to Thanksgiving; pumpkin pie, spending time with my family, Thanksgiving dinner, etc.

However, the old fashioned (traditional) idea of Thanksgiving and the concept of a cornucopia, Pilgrims, etc. from people's grade school days seems to have taken a back seat to Black Friday shopping, the "Mag Mile" lights parade, and an early Charlie Brown Christmas ....

(I sincerely think we've lost the quality of these two holidays with this transition.)

However, there is one very nice consolation to all of this pre-mature holiday mayhem: out-of-towners and their families flooding Michigan Ave. enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the season hours before the Christmas parade even started. The city of Chicago has turned this day into a day long extravaganza with the parade, and of course, little kids expressions lighting up like the Christmas trees in front of Daley Plaza at the sight of terrific parade floats, lights, balloons, etc. It makes all of this holiday hoopla worthwhile.

So on with all of the holiday shopping, walking, spending, eating, drinking, etc. .... This appears to be a very special time of year with the advent of the three wise men and the baby Jesus prompting us into action for this Santa Claus season ....

A very Merry Christmas early...
