The sights and sounds of the Gold Coast lit up the evening at the "30th Annual Evening on Astor," which took place on Wed., September 5th on Astor St. (between Goethe and Banks) and it proved to be as the invitation described "...the most elegant and fabulous block party in the country."
Started in 1982 by the late Mary Lou Maher, (President of the North State, Astor, Lake Shore Drive Association) no one back then could've envisioned how long and elaborate this block party tradition would become. The vibrant sounds of the Michael Lerich orchestra filled the evening summer air as friends, neighbors, and visitors socialized and countless little kids ran and played in Goudy Park.
Up and down Astor St. it looked more like someone's formal dining room as everything from candelabras, fine China, and trays of culinary cuisine were exquisitely arranged on tables proudly assembled on the street for public display for this special event ....
Food and drink was everywhere as a wide variety of menu items were offered to satisfy everyone's palette (in exchange for coupons): pizza, hot dogs, sausages, ice cream, watermelon, beer, wine, pop, etc.
Prizes were awarded at the end of the evening for the best decorated table and it was easy to see that one and all had a terrific time at this late summer celebration ....
With block parties like this, Astor St. will likely keep this annual tradition alive for another 30 years !!
Congratulations to Event Chair Jane Lenkman and co- chair Dianne Zaubi for this spectacular soiree....
(Proceeds from this event go to Gold Coast Neighbors Association, dedicated to the preservation and beautification of this stunning neighborhood.)
