Fake Comcast Scam Alert

Per the 5th ward Alderman's office, individuals claiming to represent Comcast have been circulating through Woodlawn conducting surveys.  It is believed that these "surveys" are simply a vehicle to gather personal information and possibly a household's schedule.

As with any unsolicited vendor, be careful.  Do not voluntarily give away any information about yourself or your neighbors.  If you see this scam happening, please call the police.

  • At least in the suburbs, we know that Comcast would never come to the door, unless it was a service call scheduled for some time between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and then it would be a subcontractor's employee who no comprende Inglis.

Actually, their customer service has improved lately, but this still obviously is a scam. The subcontractor angle, though, makes it hard to get ID when asking.

But, in another scam, I thought that Woodlawn was in the 20th Ward. Guess you are looking out for the neighbors.

  • In reply to jack:

If I'm correct, most of Woodlawn is in the 5th ward, some of it is in 20 and a sliver is in 6.

  • In reply to Woodlawn Wonder:

According to the official Ward map the only parts of the 5th that are in Woodlawn are a sliver east of the Metra Electric tracks or Blackstone Ave., and even the block with the YMCA is excluded. There is also a sliver along 67th facing the cemetery. Most of Woodlawn is in the 20th.

I assume that the posted map (copyright 2007) is the one still in effect, and not the recent reapportionment, which doesn't go into effect until the 2015 elections.

The 20th Ward map also shows the tail around Halsted, which resulted in 20th Ward Aldercreature Troutman being convicted for some kickback scheme on zoning a lot that, it turned out, wasn't in her ward.

  • In reply to jack:

I stand corrected. I'm in the sliver of Woodlawn that's in 5 (and I thank God EVERYDAY for that)

Someone pretending to be Peoples Gas was doing this in our neighborhood in Lakeview, Chicago.

  • Oh, wow... These people have came to my door and my roommate spoke to them. We don't have Comcast, so they didn't get any valuable information from us. Thanks for the heads up!!
