There is a new style of beer creeping up on us...and while some people are dismissing the Florida Weisse, I'm all about it. In a world where people consistently talk about West Coast IPAs, Cascadian Dark Ales, and other assorted styles that one region gets to claim as their own, a new and unique style is a highly scrutinized thing.
While "extreme" beers are still all the rage amongst craft aficionados, this take on a traditional German Berliner Weisse is anything but. Floridians have taken this low-ABV, sour wheat beer and added tropical fruits to balance out the natural acidity of the style. It's been said that Doug Dozark of Peg's Cantina in Gulfport, FL created the style when he brewed "Ich Bin Ein Rainbow Jelly Donut," but I don't know if anyone can really be sure.
If you're looking for more info on the style, I suggest taking a peak at David Minsky's article in the Miami New Times here.
