The Chicago Brew Bus is Chicago's best brewery tour, hands down. Owners, Kevin Salvi and Chris Ivy, have taken their love for beer and created a business that embodies everything the craft movement is about - great beer and great people! Every Saturday and Sunday these guys are out there spreading the beery love for tourist and locals alike. Beyond that, they're willing to do tours out to beer havens in the burbs and have a bar crawl planned in the future.
Last Saturday I was lucky enough to get on the tour and hang out with Kevin all afternoon. We started off in Lincoln Park at Goose Island's Clybourn brewpub, where 24 of their 34 beers are brewed onsite. While Kevin had already hand picked 4 samples for us to try, we had plenty of time to scour the menu and try something else if we wanted to. Then all 20+ patrons hopped on the bus, where outside beverages and coolers are not only permitted, but encouraged, and made the the trip to Moonshine in Wicker Park. As anticipated, 6 samples were lined up and waiting for each of us to enjoy once we walked in the door. After a quick sneak-peek of the brewing facility, we boarded the bus again and made our way down to our final destination, Haymarket Pub & Brewery in the West Loop. There we had our last 4 samples of the day and a lucky group got taken downstairs to see the barrel room prior to our departure.
Not only was the afternoon filled with great beer, but great people as well. Our motley crew included a group of beer loving girls, a bachelor party from Indiana, some random bros from the city and a handful of couples there to enjoy the beer and company. People traded stories throughout the day and mingled as the seating arrangements changed from venue to venue. Beers where shared out of coolers during the rides and a few business cards might have exchanged hands as well.
One thing is for certain, I'll be back and I'll be telling everyone I know about it!
