Beware of Craigslist home rental scams

A shocking number of home and apartment rental ads on Craigslist are nothing but fraudulent bait-and-switch come-ons.

The ad pictured above, for example, offers a 4-bedroom home at 1394 E Braymore Cir in Naperville for $700 a month. It's hard to imagine that there's anyone out there gullible enough to entertain the notion that this home can be rented at that price. The home sold for $297,000 three years ago, and the quoted rent barely covers the real estate taxes on the property.

The prevalence of these ads, however, is an indication that people can be suckered in by an offer that seems too good to be true.

If a rental isn't being offered by a reputable management company or brokerage firm you should never write a check to the purported owner without, at a minimum, first seeing photo identification and verifying that the person whose ID you've seen is in title to the property or has the authority to rent it.

I think everybody should check out the Scam Detector app. I believe they're online as well.
