Plans for the streetscaping were narrowly approved by Oak Park trustees despite heavy skepticism and over the objections of some local businesses who fear that construction at this time may negatively impact an already difficult business climate.
"There will be an impact no doubt," said Ray Johnson, a strong supporter of the projects. "But what we can do and what we are obligated to do is provide infrastructure ... and create an environment and experience that is greater than any other place in America."
