You'll occasionally find a livable home in Wilmette selling for under $300,000. What you won't find is a home that fits that description and lingers on the market for more than a few days. If you're looking in this price range in Wilmette, be prepared to act quickly, and don't expect the home to be drop-dead beautiful.
The 3-bedroom, 2-bath, split-level 1950s home at 2924 Central is a good example of how quickly affordable starter homes are moving. It came on the market a week ago and within a few days was in Contingent status, subject to attorney approval and home inspection.
The big draw here, obviously, is the home's price and location: a half-block from Romona School, and with easy expressway access.
Wilmette's a wonderful place to live, with great schools and parks. You may find a nicer – perhaps much nicer – home in the northern suburbs for the same price as a less desirable one in Wilmette. It isn't easy to weight the trade-offs between a better home and a better environment, so stop trying to do so. Just opt for the better environment. You won't regret it in the long run.
