Is the Super Bowl depressing North Shore open houses?

One might think there would be a normal complement of open houses for new listings this Super Bowl Sunday, given the lack of participation by the Bears and the Packers. One would be wrong.

Redfin is the answer that I hear most often when I question North Shore buyers about the venues they search for open house information.

A search at Redfin for newly-listed (less than 7 days on the market) homes on the North Shore returned few options.

Redfin returns blanks for open houses for new listings this Sunday in Highland Park, Highwood, Kenilworth, Lake Bluff and Lake Forest. Only four newly-listed homes will be open for viewing in Glencoe, four in Winnetka, two in Wilmette and one each in Evanston and Northfield.

  • Besides the question whether open houses really sell homes (as opposed to being a recruiting tool by agents, who then use the Multiple Listing Service to find what the buyers really want, as also indicated by all the key vaults hanging from the handrail), the main deterrent seems to be that more owners are going to nursing homes or the grave than are willing to buy from them. So, one week's statistics don't seem to prove much.
