The Chicago Tribune recently carried the sad news that Bookman's Alley, an Evanston treasure, will be closing soon.
The above video opens with a brief look at the exterior of this widely-known used bookstore. I'd arrived at the spot with Andy Kiener from Grand Bend at Green Bay before the store's noon opening, so we were unable to explore the quirky, antique-laden interior.
The retail and dining scene in downtown Evanston has, over the years, resembled a tug-of-war between locally-owned establishments and national chains, all drawn to the location by its pedestrian scale, convenient public transportation and affluent trading area.
Is the closing of Bookman's Alley a step forward or a step backward for the character of downtown Evanston?
