Proponents of affordable housing in Winnetka have created a Web site - Winnetka is Neighborly (WIN) - to inform Winnetkans on the long-simmering controversy. The site links to a Google Group which people can join to stay current.
Anyone who's spent any amount of time in Winnetka has seen the many modest homes, 2-flats and apartments that punctuate the community's arterials and date from a time when Winnetka was a more economically diverse community. A history page at the WIN site provides some background.
New Trier Partners, the developer of the Fell site at Lincoln and Elm has proposed a new twist on affordable housing - increasing the residential density of its project and offering units at lower prices. Trib Local has the details.
As a humorous aside, I once sat in a meeting where someone - with a straight face and no sense of irony - referred to the Fell redevelopment as "gentrifying Winnetka."
