The rental market gets tighter

We’ve been tracking the MLS-listed inventory of homes and condos offered for rent in Chicago’s North Shore communities every week for the last 51 weeks. This week the inventory reached a new low of 234, despite the addition of 30 new listings. The number of rentals peaked at 377 in August of last year and... Read more »

Tony Grunsfeld, noted North Shore modernist architect, dies

Blair Kamin, the Tribune’s Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic, reported that Ernest A. Grunsfeld III, better known as Tony Grunsfeld, passed away last Friday. Many of Grunsfeld’s greatest homes sit on hidden bluffs along Lake Michigan, invisible to the passing public. I shot the above video, at one of Grunsfeld’s more modest creations in Winnetka, nearly... Read more »

Another half-off sale on Glencoe new construction

About six weeks ago I posted on two new construction Glencoe homes that eventually sold for steep discounts from their original asking price. When we first visited 501 Greenleaf (pictured above) in Glencoe, back in July of 2006, the home was still under construction and priced at $4,295,000. It sold last November for $2,050,000, less... A Wilmette 7-bedroom for $419K

How is it possible, you might be wondering, for a 7-bedroom, 4 ½ bath home in Wilmette to have been on and off the market for nearly 2 years and not be snapped up in an instant at its current price of $419,000? Is it on a busy street? No, it’s on a quiet cul-de-sac?... Read more »

A slim selection of new North Shore rentals

There were only 27 homes, apartments and condos newly-listed for rent on the North Shore this past week in the Multiple Listing Service. More than half of those listings – 5 single-family homes and 10 apartments and condos – were in Evanston. There were no new rental listings in Kenilworth, Winnetka, Highwood or Highland Park,... A Stanley Anderson home in Lake Forest

Stanley Anderson? His name isn’t as well known as Howard Van Doren Shaw or David Adler, but Anderson – who began his career working for Shaw – was one of Lake Forest’s most prolific architects. According to Lake Forest Country Places, Anderson played a pivotal role in preserving a historical style, since his firm’s “dominance... Read more »

$400K price drop on Northfield home

When we first visited the family-friendly perfect-for-entertaining 6-bedroom, 4 ½ bath home at 775 Sunset Ridge Rd in Northfield it was priced at $1,950,000. The home, which was built by the current owners, first came on the market in June of 2009. The price has since been reduced to $1,550,000. A Redfin agent comments: “Lots... Read more »

Foreclosure in the heart of Winnetka - not

The newly-listed home at 58 Woodley Rd is billed, in the listing description, as a “unique grand mansion in heart of Winnetka.” Not only is the home nowhere near the heart of Winnetka, as everyone familiar with Woodley Rd knows it’s not even in Winnetka, but in an unincorporated part of Cook County. The listing... Read more »

In Kenilworth Gardens that fourth bedroom will cost you $200K

Over at North Shore Views Anne West lists the homes for sale in Wilmette’s Kenilworth Gardens neighborhood, an area that’s long had a strong appeal to young families. You can see the area in my video from several years ago. The four 3-bedroom homes currently on the market range in price from $575,000 to $629,000.... Read more »
