Wilmette schools seek tax hike

Romona School, Wilmette, IL

Wilmette School District 39, which serves most of the Village of Wilmette, is proposing a property tax increase that would amount to about $58.80 per $1,000 of real estate taxes paid for homes in the district. The proposal will be on the ballot at the April 5 elections.

The reasons for the proposed increase are outlined in the "February Scoop" from the District 39 Superintendent, which suggests sharp cutbacks in staff and programs if the referendum fails to gain voter approval. The District currently has a $5.5 million annual operating deficit.
