I don't miss you, Blackhawks fans

I don't miss you, Blackhawks fans

"Oh great, the Blackhawks fans are here."

Every woman in the locker room before our beginner ice hockey class paused when someone said this.

"Wait, aren't we fans too," we asked?

"You know what I mean," she said. "The fans."

We got it. She meant the fans that were here just as spectators.

The best advice I heard: DON'T shoot the puck!

Thumbnail image for 'The best advice I heard: DON'T shoot the puck!'
This video, from the excellent website How-To Hockey, has given me perhaps the best advice I have heard in a while. The title of the video, Don’t Shoot the Puck, is misleading, as it effectively explains how new players should shoot a hockey puck. Before I saw this video, I would just whack at the... Read more »

I scored a goal...against my own team. I feel shame.

I scored a goal...against my own team. I feel shame.

Since I started learning to play hockey just over two years ago, I have written about all of my "firsts" -- from my first lesson, to my first game, to my first goal, to my first championship. Now I must tell you about a first I am not very proud of. Not too long ago, I got my first "own-goal;" that is, I accidentally knocked the puck into my own net.

Puck & Grind 3-on-3 Charity Hockey Tournament

Puck & Grind 3-on-3 Charity Hockey Tournament

On Saturday, November 21, hockey and burlesque will team up for charity. Puck & Grind is an upcoming event that will start the day with a 3-on-3 hockey tournament at Johnny's Ice House that is open to all skill levels -- including new players like us. Later on, the event will continue at the Lincoln Tap Room, with a Blackhawks watch party. Before and after the 'Hawks game, and during intermissions, there will be burlesque performances. This unlikely duo of hockey and burlesque will benefit the You Can Play Project, whose mission is to make locker rooms safe spaces for all athletes, regardless of sexual orientation.

Review: Johnny's Ice House 3 on 3 Adult Beginner League

Review: Johnny's Ice House 3 on 3 Adult Beginner League

Johnny's Ice House West 3 on 3 Adult Beginner League is going to restart soon for the fall / winter round. This is one venue where beginner players can sign up to play, get placed on a team and build team experience. The cost for this league was $16 a game ($175 total for 11 games), included 10 regular season games, one guaranteed playoff game and a team jersey. Team jerseys are not re-issued if you already have one from a prior round. Goalies play for free but are not given a jersey. If you have been taking classes and are thinking about joining a league, this could be a step between a beginner class and a full sized team.

Review: Elite Hockey Pro Hockey Skate Guards ★★★★★

Review: Elite Hockey Pro Hockey Skate Guards ★★★★★

Not too long ago, I bought a nice pair of new hockey skates. I figured if I was going to get high-end hockey skates, I might as well get some boss skate guards, too. When spending $400 on hockey skates, another $20 on good skate guards doesn't seem like such a big deal. The Pro Hockey Skate Guards by Elite Hockey are top-of-the-line and are better than any skate guard that I've used.

Review: Sneaker Balls Hockey Puck Deodorizers ★★★★★

Review: Sneaker Balls Hockey Puck Deodorizers ★★★★★

These puck-shaped Sneaker Balls Deodorizers were an impulse buy -- just a small item I threw in when I bought a practice-weight hockey jersey. So, I didn't have high expectations, and certainly wasn't planning on writing a review of such a peripheral item. However, I am so impressed with Sneaker Balls that I feel a review is in order. These will go a long way in helping your equipment not stink to high heaven.

Review: Warrior Covert DT2 Hockey Gloves ★★★★½

Review: Warrior Covert DT2 Hockey Gloves ★★★★½

When I started playing hockey in June 2013, I had some oldschool hockey gloves from the 1990s that looked cool -- with lace-up ties at the wrist -- but were kind of clunky. Over time, I realized that they weren't very comfortable and that I couldn't feel my hockey stick very well. Eventually, that became more and more of a problem, so I decided to get some new gloves.

After trying on a dozen or so pairs, I decided to purchase a pair of Warrior Covert DT2 hockey gloves. I've had these for about 18 months now, and used them an average of three times a week. So I feel that is a thorough enough of a trial period to write an honest review.

Two Years of Noobliness

Two Years of Noobliness
If you told me two years ago that one day, I would play on a hockey team with teal jerseys and a video game character as our logo, I would have said that you were crazy. Me? Play hockey? But I suck at sports and can barely skate. Yet here we are, two years later.... Read more »
