Playing A Level Up

Playing A Level Up

Not too long ago, a friend named Mike asked me to sub on his team, the Danglers, for a Saturday afternoon game. I was excited. The Danglers play in the Federal League at Johnny's Ice House, which is a step up, skill-wise, from the Heartland Novice Hockey League that I currently play in. I was eager to see if I could hack it at the next level. Would I fit in? Or would I make a dumb mistake that costs us the game?

Best weird bruise ever...

I have an odd photographic souvenir from my 3 on 3 league team this past summer. This big guy on the opposing team was really chippy and bent on knocking the stuffing out of every single one of my teammates. I took a wallop from him along the boards which resulted in the weirdest bruise in my life...

Puck & Grind 3-on-3 Charity Hockey Tournament

Puck & Grind 3-on-3 Charity Hockey Tournament

On Saturday, November 21, hockey and burlesque will team up for charity. Puck & Grind is an upcoming event that will start the day with a 3-on-3 hockey tournament at Johnny's Ice House that is open to all skill levels -- including new players like us. Later on, the event will continue at the Lincoln Tap Room, with a Blackhawks watch party. Before and after the 'Hawks game, and during intermissions, there will be burlesque performances. This unlikely duo of hockey and burlesque will benefit the You Can Play Project, whose mission is to make locker rooms safe spaces for all athletes, regardless of sexual orientation.

Review: Johnny's Ice House 3 on 3 Adult Beginner League

Review: Johnny's Ice House 3 on 3 Adult Beginner League

Johnny's Ice House West 3 on 3 Adult Beginner League is going to restart soon for the fall / winter round. This is one venue where beginner players can sign up to play, get placed on a team and build team experience. The cost for this league was $16 a game ($175 total for 11 games), included 10 regular season games, one guaranteed playoff game and a team jersey. Team jerseys are not re-issued if you already have one from a prior round. Goalies play for free but are not given a jersey. If you have been taking classes and are thinking about joining a league, this could be a step between a beginner class and a full sized team.

Review: Chicago Outdoor Hockey League D-Level in Niles ★★★☆☆

Review: Chicago Outdoor Hockey League D-Level in Niles ★★★☆☆

I have mixed feelings about playing in the Chicago Outdoor Hockey League (COHL). You see, two years back, I wrote about the COHL for "The Hockey News" (article here), and was soon inspired to learn how to play hockey. Watching a few COHL games was the catalyst for me to become The Hockey Noob, and I am grateful for the inspiration. Things came full-circle for me when I joined the COHL for the 2014-15 season.

At the same time, playing in the COHL was not as great as I imagined. There were some really big upsides and downsides to the outdoor league, which plays in Niles and in Cicero. I played in the COHL D-Level "Northsiders" Division in Niles, so that is what is reviewed here...

I joined a team, but they ditch the games

I joined a team, but they ditch the games
There will come a time in your adult novice ice hockey career when you look into your hockey bag and realize you have a cheap jersey with a lousy, generic iron on vinyl design. Congratulations! You are now on a team. In my case, I have a spot on the “Detroit Red Wings” are we’re... Read more »

On the Disabled List: The Best Hockey Game I Didn't Play

On the Disabled List: The Best Hockey Game I Didn't Play

Last week, I had to make a hard decision and decide to not play hockey. My Heartland D-League team, Blades of Steel, was going to play for our league's championship for the first time since June 2014. After earning a first-round bye as the best team in our division, we had to claw our way back from a 3-1 deficit in the semifinal game. With six minutes left in the third period, we scored two goals to force overtime, played a scoreless overtime, then won in the fifth round of the shootout. For the third time in four seasons, we were going to the finals. And by we, I mean my teammates. I had to sit this one out...

I scored a goal and it wasn't a lucky bounce this time

I scored a goal and it wasn't a lucky bounce this time

I set a goal for myself at the start of my current hockey season: score one goal. Just one.  And it took me four months, but I finally scored a goal in a game last week...

My First Hockey Tournament: an Eye-Opening, Nightmarish Experience

My First Hockey Tournament: an Eye-Opening, Nightmarish Experience
Earlier this month, my Blades of Steel teammates and I entered a hockey tournament. None of us had ever played in one, and we were still pretty high on the hog about winning our league championship last month. After playing so many games against the same teams over and over, we were looking forward to... Read more »

Championships are great, but great teammates are better

Championships are great, but great teammates are better
Nine months ago, I started learning how to play hockey. I had no idea that I would help start a new league, and never thought I would be the captain of a winning hockey team. And yet, on Monday night my team — Blades of Steel — won the first-ever Heartland Novice Hockey League Championship.... Read more »
