I'm still trying to wrap my head around March Madness being cancelled. I used to work at the NCAA. I was part of the staff that put on the Women's Basketball Tournament up until 2018, and yet it's still mind blowing. And sad. My heart is broken for the student-athletes whose playing careers ended so abruptly. That everything they worked so hard for was gone.
I love March Madness. I've blogged about it several times because that opening weekend of the tournament is one of my favorite times of the year. Not just because of the actual games, but because it brings so many people together. Specifically, guys. You walk into any bar and it's full of 'em! So many more men than women in there. They're all having fun. Strangers become friends by the end of the day. I love it.
So while it's sad that the tournament was cancelled, that just means there's an opportunity to find new ways to meet people. You know I love dating apps and most matchmaking services, but let's take it up a notch. With people getting more comfortable with Zoom for work, they are also using it to find ways to be social with their friends. There are also virtual trivia nights that you can jump into. Concerts being live streamed. Each of these provides an avenue for meeting someone new. Someone with shared interests.
You not only need to pop into these events, but you need to be active and vocal. Comment when you can. Contribute so you grab attention. It's not enough just to be there. Get noticed! On the flipside, if someone catches your eye, take action. It's okay to make the first move. I know it can be scary, but what's the worst thing that could happen?
