Fireworks. Blech. Not a fan. But they bring people together, especially for the 4th of July holiday, so sometimes I get on board to watch them. I mean, if it could end in me getting a date, I would usually do it. Other times, I don't want to be anywhere near them. We all have different things we're looking for in a party, as well as in a date, but we can find the perfect way to celebrate the holiday, which may lead to finding a date.
I've put together my Top 10 4th of July Make-Your-Own-Fireworks List that will help you decide what you should do for the holiday. If you don't live in Chicago, look for events in your area like these so you don't miss out on a truly epic day.
4th of July Beach Party at Castaways
I love going to North Avenue Beach on a normal day, but add in the 4th of July and it's sure to be a party. So if sun, sand and DJs are your thing, the music will be spinning from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m., which is plenty of time to find your dance partner.
They've made their fireworks display even longer this year, which makes me cringe, but for those who love them, head on out to the track. With all they have going on, you can find your match by hanging out in one of the special areas, including the Miller Lite Deck, Marquee Tents, Governor's Room, Sikes @2200 and the International Skyline Lounge.
July 4th Fireworks Booze Cruise
Cruising on Lake Michigan with a DJ on a yacht, yes please! This unique environment is a fun way to meet people, as well as reflect on the amazing opportunities like this that we have in this country.
Lottie's Patio and Pooch Party
No fireworks here, but you can't beat a chill bar for some day drinking in the middle of the week, IF you like dogs of course. Dogs are always a great conversation starter, so this event makes it easy to meet someone. Even if you don't have a dog, you can still enjoy a great day out at this neighborhood bar.
Crawl of Duty - The Freedom Bar Crawl
Typical bar crawls make it easy to socialize with strangers, and this pub crawl takes it up a notch. With its reputation for fun, this crawl includes squirt guns on a hot day and markers so you can sign each other's shirts. If you can't think of something clever to write, jotting down your phone number totally works!
Grant Park Independence Day Salute
For a more sophisticated eventing, this annual event showcases patriotic music by the Grant Park Orchestra. After the concert, you can head down by the water to take in the Navy Pier fireworks.
If you want to be in the middle of it all, Navy Pier is the place to be ... IF you're looking for families and fireworks. Navy Pier is already the top tourist attraction that draws thousands of people every day of the week, so with an at-capacity crowd on the 4th of July it is sure to be one of the best places to celebrate 'Merica. And possibly meet a single mom or dad.
If you live in the city, the suburbs can seem like a long way to go for a date. I mean, how far is your radius on Match.com when you're looking for a date? For this holiday, you might want to expand it out to Naperville to see if ribs and music bring out some of the fun folks in the 'burbs. Plus, the proceeds of the event are donated to eliminate child abuse and domestic violence.
Evanston Fourth Of July Celebration
Evanston never feels like a suburb to me because it's so close to Chicago, but its Independence Day celebration definitely does with the parade, kids' fun run and fireworks spread out across nine playgrounds throughout the 'burb. If you're looking for a family man or woman, celebrating in what seems like an extension of the city will be a great place to be.
Anywhere You Want
The best place to meet someone is out doing something that you enjoy, so take advantage of the holiday that brings so many people out to celebrate all of the things we are fortunate to have access to in America. No matter where you go, be part of the celebration. Talk to strangers. Tell your story. Get a date.
