If you don't know where you're going, you will never get there. I've heard this a million times, but it sparked something today when I heard David Bach make this comment on Marie Forleo's podcast. I was thinking about how horrible I am at directions. Driving ... I get lost. A lot. Cooking ... I throw away meals. A lot. So when I heard this reminder today, I thought about why.
Because I didn't know how to actually get there. When I'm driving somewhere I've never been, I don't type in the address to check out the route. I just punch it in, check the time it's going to take me (add in ten minutes to get lost) and wait for the lady to yell out the next turn.
Same with cooking. I scan the recipe to buy the ingredients, well, mostly to see how many ingredients there are ... my limit is seven. But I don't look at the entire recipe. I check the total prep and cook time (and add 20 minutes), but I don't look at the steps that actually go into making the meal. I was halfway through preparing lemon chicken and I was like, how in the world do you zest a lemon?!
So while I knew what I wanted in both of these scenarios (meet my friends for a night out and have a badass meal), not taking the time to actually see what I needed to do to make them happen put the end results in jeopardy. Seriously, how do you zest a lemon?!
When I talk with friends and clients who are frustrated because they don't have a boyfriend/girlfriend, it's because they know where they want to be, but they don't know how to get there. What steps are you taking every day to get you closer to finding someone amazing? Invest the time to truly think through a plan that will help you achieve your goal, and keep investing the time to evaluate what's working and what needs to be done differently. Planning on the front end to create your dating roadmap, you will save you time, energy, money and frustration on the back end. This is true for all parts of your life, especially to decide whether it's even worth it to zest that damn lemon!
