Who wouldn't want these dogs?
We all love our pets, right?  Well, it shouldn't be a surprise that dogs are increasingly being involved in custody cases when relationships end.  Apparently, people are willing to spend a lot of money and litigate visitation and other arrangements when couples divorce.  According to the timesunion.com, divorcing couples "still fight like cats and dogs in divorce court. But more and more they are fighting about cats and dogs."  Here are some bullets from the article which is an interesting read: 

 

  • Custody cases involving pets are increasing, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers;
  • Judges often decide to keep a pet with the child if both are involved in a custody dispute;
  • One matrimonial lawyer's caseload involving pets has increased over 15% in the last 5 years;
  • Judges are viewing pets as similar to children in custody disputes;
  • Pet decisions trump others such as mortgages, debts, or loans in relationship splits;
  • Illinois is one of the States where pets can be protected with restraining orders;

It's a very interesting article, but not surprising.  I'm wondering how many couples stay together for the sake of the dog?
