Movie Review: Trolls

Movie Review: Trolls

TROLLS

Genre: Animated Musical Comedy

Rating: PG

Running Time: 92 mins.

Premise: Fun, music-loving, big-haired trolls find thier peaceful existence threatened when their hideout is ambushed by the troll-eating Bergens and several trolls are kidnapped. It's up to perpetually peppy Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and stick-in-the-mud Branch (Justin Timberlake) to save the day.

Behind-the-Scenes: Timberlake produced the soundtrack album, which co-opts several hit pop songs and also includes his own summer smash, "Can't Stop the Feeling."  Based on the Good Luck Trolls toy line created by Thomas Dam.

The Good: The tagline for the movie is "Find Your Happy Place," and that's exactly what the movie provides: a happy place for 92 minutes. The animation is bright and colorful. The music is fun and frequent. The voicework is spot-on.  Adults will be able to easily tolerate the movie, and might even get a few chuckles out of it, but their kids are the ones who will be dancing in the aisles and asking for the soundtrack on the way out of the theater.

The Bad: The script is nothing special, and seems content to just jog in place while trying to drum up conflict and fill the running time. The movie is so darn genial throughout that it never develops any real stakes. Fans of the original tunes will be aghast at some of the liberties taken in modifying them for Troll use.

Should You See It?: As I write this, in the wake of election night and a deeply divided country, I think we all could use a little happy in our lives right now, so yes.

Star Rating: ***1/2 out of 5 stars.

Better Than: The Secret Life of Pets, The Angry Birds Movie

Worse Than: Storks, Zootopia
