With Batman already fighting Superman in March and The Jungle Book absolutely crushing the box office last weekend, nobody could blame you for thinking the summer movie season was already under way. You'd be wrong though. Summer officially starts (for movie geeks anyway) on May 6, when Captain America: Civil War is unleashed.
As regular readers know, I love summer movie season. This is my Councilman Jamm, man. [Side note: nothing like a random Parks & Recreation reference to connect with people] From the spectacle to the out-of-control budgets to the escape from the heat and the one major release-a-week, summer movie season rules. Sure, many of the movies inevitably prove to be a crushing letdown. But past summers have given us Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight, The Avengers, and Star Trek. The less said about summer movies like The Lone Ranger, R.I.P.D., and Pluto Nash, the better.
Just like in years past, I'm attempting to look into my crystal ball and predict the biggest hits and flops of summer. Easier said than done, but if anyone's equipped to do it, well...let's just say you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I think Michael Scott once said that, quoting Michael Jordan. [Side note: random The Office reference for the win!] So, here they are - my picks for the 11 biggest hits, and 9 biggest flops of summer 2016:
