Summer TV: What are you watching?

Summer TV: What are you watching?

I'll be honest. I miss reruns. I miss when new TV bowed out at the end of May and gave us a chance to miss it. Right now I feel kind of overwhelmed. I still need to catch up on old TV I've missed (Hey there, Hannibal, The Americans, and House of Cards Season 2), but there are all these new shows starting as well. Thankfully I don't really watch most of the returning summer shows, so at least there's that.

Here's what I'm liking so far of the new summer TV shows:

1. The Leftovers (HBO): I haven't seen a pilot this compelling in a while. And I've seen a lot of pilots.

2. Tyrant (FX): I really, really want this to be a Middle Eastern Dallas. I'm not sure it's going in the direction I want it to, but I do think this show has a ton of potential. Once it slows down and really figures out what it's doing, this could mature into the show it has the potential to be.

3. Vicious (PBS): What if Gandalf was in a long-term relationship with I, Clau-Clau-Claudius and their best friend was Madame Maxime? Oh, and their neighbor is Ramsay Snow. Actor-wise, this show has everything. It's a goofy throwback of a sitcom, but I kind of love it for that reason, and I love it because we get to see Ian McKellan do comedy. It's obvious he's having such a fun time.

New shows this week:

1. Finding Carter (Tuesday 9 PM, MTV): Girl learns she was abducted as a baby. I don't know. This sounds like a CBS procedural masking as a teen show.

2. Extant (Wednesday 8 PM, CBS): Halle Berry, TV star. She's an astronaut who arrives home (to her robot son) mysteriously pregnant. I don't have a lot of faith in this one.

3. Welcome to Sweden/Working the Engels (Thursday 8 PM/8:30 PM, NBC): Two new comedies buried in the middle of summer! Sounds promising.

4. The Strain (Sunday 9 PM, FX): A scary vampire show from the mind of Guillermo Del Toro. Carlton Cuse is head writer. Stars Corey Stoll and Argus Filch/Walder Frey. I have hopes.

What are you watching this summer? Are there any new (or old) shows I should add to my ever-growing list of must-watch TV programs?
