A HAUNTED HOUSE
Running Time: 1 hour 26 mins.
Premise: A young couple (Marlon Wayans and Essence Atkins) are terrorized by ghosts and other paranormal activity when they move in together.
Behind-the-Scenes: Wayans co-wrote the script and returns to the horror spoof territory he mined to great success with Scary Movie 1 and 2.
The Good: I'll say this about Wayans - the guy commits. There is one decent sequence involving an Ouija board, where a ghost misspells "Ghost" and is then subject to ridicule.
The Bad: Where to start? The spoof genre, popularized way back when by movies like Airplane, The Naked Gun, and Hot Shots!, has run its course. Most movies of this type (think Epic Movie, Date Movie, Disaster Movie) confuse referencing other movies with spoofing them. A Haunted House falls into that same trap. The "jokes" here are obnoxious, overplayed, homophobic, and just plain stupid. Sometimes all at once. Sample bit: at one point, Wayans comes home drunk, shits on the floor, and tries to blame it on a ghost the next morning. Yes, you see the poop.
Should You See It?: No. This is one ugly, mean-spirited comedy.
