Fall Pilot-Palooza: Elementary, Mindy Project, Ben & Kate, Vegas, Mob Doctor, Neighbors

ELEMENTARY (Thurs. at 10/9c on CBS) A smart and handsomely shot re-working of Sherlock Holmes. Yes, it's a procedural and I usually hate those, but Sherlock is like the ultimate procedural character. Johnny Lee Miller does a terrific job. The New York setting is nice change of pace, and Lucy Liu proves to be a surprisingly effective Watson. It's no BBC Sherlock, but, hey, few things are. Grade: B+
This week was a crazy one for TV fans.  Returning shows are back.  New shows are starting.  And viewers are just trying to deal with the madness and schedule their DVRs accordingly.  Hammervision is here to help.  The bottom line: The Mindy Project and Elementary are worth watching.  You can pass on all the rest.  Check back on Monday... Zits, Substitutes, and the War on TERROR
Cory Barker of TV Surveillance and This Was Television let me write with him this week about the show The Unit and how it relates to the War on TERROR. And Emma Fraser and I are back at This Was Television writing about My So-Called Life. This week’s topics: zits and substitutes. What was your... Read more »

New Fall TV: This "Revolution" Will Be Televised

New Fall TV: This "Revolution" Will Be Televised
REVOLUTION (Mondays at 9c on NBC). It should come as no surprise that one of the most ambitious television shows of the new fall season has J.J. Abrams behind it.  Here, he partners with co-executive producer (and director of the pilot) Jon Favreau, and creator Eric Kripke (Supernatural).  If you know me, you know that... Read more »

New Fall TV: NBC Sitcoms (Go On, The New Normal, Men With Kids)

GO ON (Tuesdays, 8:00c on NBC). Is it nice to see Matthew Perry back on the small screen again? Yes. Is this the best possible vehicle for his unique talent? No. The cast is decent enough, but the show feels both too manic and too trite. And the laughs are sparse. Going up against New Girl and Happy Endings (in its new slot) will not help this show's survival (unless everyone in the world sticks around to watch this show after The Voice, in which case, go on with your bad self, Go On). But hopefully the show will be cancelled and Miss Chanandler Bong can focus on finding himself a decent cable dramedy on which he can provide some comic relief. Grade: C
TV is delicious. That was our placeholder text and I’m keeping it. We’re finally getting around to talking about the new NBC sitcoms, some of which you may have watched when they aired during the Olympics. I’ll say this about NBC, they know what the kids want! “What the kids want” being: MONKEYS! CHANDLER BING,... Read more »

Tweet Reviews: Lawless, Raiders, Celeste, Bachelorette, and Oogieloves

LAWLESS. Mildly entertaining action drama featuring great performances by, no surprise here, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain. There are some pretty ludicrous plot twists to swallow and the story, true as it may be, never really grips you entirely. *** stars.
This week on Tweet Reviews… Shia LaBeouf shuts up and lets his acting do the talking in Lawless; Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg make you want to root for Celeste and Jesse Forever; Raiders of the Lost Ark gets an amazing IMAX re-release; Bachelorette offers a frustrating Video On Demand viewing experience and tries to... Fall TV 2012: What Do You Want From Me?

A little housekeeping today… As we’ve done the past few years, John and I are going to be watching all the new pilots as they air this season. Just like regular folk, but with a blog and snarky opinions. So watch for those posts in the coming weeks and experience in real time two people... Read more »
