"Madagascar 3" Is Manic Summer Fun For Everyone

Genre: Animated family comedy

Premise: Leaving the comfort of Africa behind, Alex (Ben Stiller), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith), Marty (Chris Rock), and Melman head to Europe and join a traveling circus in yet another attempt to get back to their zoo in Manhattan.

Behind-the-Scenes: The script was co-written by Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale).  Say, what?

The Good: Probably the best of the three Madagascar movies.  It's fast-paced and manic - jokes whiz by and the movie works hard to entertain.  The animation is bright and stylish, and though I didn't see the movie in 3D, I suspect it works pretty well in that format.  Bryan Cranston, Jessica Chastain, and Martin Short contribute solid voice work as the new circus animals.  Two words: Circus Afro.

The Bad:  The movie may be too manic for it's own good and is hard to take seriously as anything other than a 90-minute kid diversion.  Katy Perry's "Firework" is beyond overplayed at this point - did we really need it to be used twice in the last 20 minutes?  Two words: Circus Afro.

Should You See It?:  Yes.  It's a fun, silly summer movie.  Perfect for kids, and adults should get a kick out of it as well.

Rating: ***1/2 out of 5 stars.
