THE THREE STOOGES
Premise: The 3 Stooges - Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos), Larry (Sean Hayes), and Curly (Will Sasso) - try to save their orphanage and accidentally end up in a murder plot and starring on Jersey Shore.
Behind-the-Scenes: The Farrelly Brothers (There's Something About Mary) have been working on a Three Stooges movie adaptation for what feels like forever. At one point in pre-production, the movie was set to star Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, and Jim Carrey.
The Good: This is nowhere near the train wreck suggested by all of its marketing. The Farrelly Brothers show real fondness for the characters, and a good grasp on what made them work. The three actors playing the Stooges go beyond mere impression, and almost eerily recapture the original actors' performances. They are fantastic - particularly, Will Sasso as Curly. The movie has a go-for-broke tone, befitting its slapstick-y style of comedy. I liked seeing Larry David as the stern nun who continually takes a beating at the hands of the Stooges.
The Bad: The humor is immature and overly repetitive. There are only so many eye pokes you can take before it stops being funny (if you ever found it funny to begin with). The murder and Jersey Shore subplots don't add much, and aren't all that clever or well-executed. Jersey Shore, really? Talk about dating yourself.
Should You See It?: Maybe. Depends on your tolerance for Stooge-style slapstick. I had fun with it. Low expectations certainly helped.
Rating: *** out of 5 stars.
