A Lisa By Any Other Name

I don’t look like a Julie. I don’t know what Julies are supposed to look like, but I’m not it. Invariably, I meet someone, tell them my name, they forget it and call me something else. Usually they call me Lisa, which is just unfortunate because (sorry, real Lisas) the name “Lisa” brings to my... Read more »

In Defense Of...The Island

In Defense Of...The Island
It’s almost become a national pastime to hate on Michael Bay and his movies.  For the last four years, he’s become defined by the Transformers series, rendering everything else an afterthought.  But back in 2005, Bay was on the verge of pushing his career into more respectable territory.  He’d dabbled in it once before with... 12 Questions About Breaking Bad - Shotgun

12 Questions About Breaking Bad - Shotgun
1. Does the fact that Walter White, drug chef extraordinaire, tools around in a Pontiac Aztec make him more or less of a badass? Definitely more.  He’s thumbing his nose at stereotype saying, “What’s that, world?  Yes, I drive around in a shoebox.  What are you gonna do about it?” 2. Where was he going... Read more »

Movie Revue: 30 Minutes, Help, FD5, Smurfs

Movie Revue: 30 Minutes, Help, FD5, Smurfs
August 12-14 PICK OF THE WEEK 30 Minutes or Less (***1/2).  Promising sophomore director Ruben Fleischer’s follow-up to the insta-classic Zombieland is a rude, frantic, R-rated comedy that scores where it counts thanks to two key factors: (1) its length – the movie only runs a scant 83 minutes and barely takes time to breathe, ending... 'True Blood' Recap - In a Sunburned Country

'True Blood' Recap - In a Sunburned Country
True Blood literally surprised me two whole times last night, two whole times where I went, “Whoa, did not see that coming.”  Good on you, True Blood.  Good on you. And!  Shockingly, we saw a couple of fringe (read: tedious) story lines actually tie themselves into the greater narrative of the season.  So, congratulations, Arlene... Read more »

Robert Hammerle on...Terri

Robert Hammerle on...Terri
*Fails to Deliver on Promising Premise What was so colossally disappointing about “Terri” is not so much the quality of this quirky little independent film as the way it was packaged. Who hasn’t seen the previews and not been tantalized by the expectation of seeing a dark comedy about adolescent dysfunction? Well, and as much... Read more »

Robert Hammerle on...Rise of the Planet of the Apes
*Highly Recommended If you take the time to see “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, and Lord knows you should, be prepared to strap yourself in, because this is an enormously rewarding thrill ride that will also take you to dark places in the human sub-conscious that you would rather avoid. It is as... Read more »

List-O-Mania!: Lucky Number 5s

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Some may argue that this is really the second movie, but that's hogwash. Just look at the title. This is Episode V! Far and away, the best fifth movie/fourth sequel of them all. Nothing will ever beat it.
In honor of this week’s release of the sure-to-be-fantastic (cue sarcasm) Final Destination 5, this inaugural edition of “List-O-Mania!” sets its eyes on the best fifth movies (or fourth sequels) in a series.  Most film series never get to that point (stopping around the third or fourth movie).  But when they do, the fifth is... Robert Hammerle on...Friends with Benefits
*As Entertainment, Odorless, Colorless, Pointless Yet Strangely Fun in a Shallow Way. (or as it is also known, “Sport F_ _king with Good Buds; How could this possibly go wrong?”) Let’s face it, you have to give the Hollywood studios credit where credit is due. It’s the one place on earth where the word “redundancy” is considered not... Read more »
