Geek Alert!  My friend Jonah sent me a link to this the other day, and I just had to fill it out.  What is it, you ask?  It's a bracket of 64 movies, in competition against each other for the title of "Greatest Science Fiction Movie Ever Made."  There are no right or wrong answers with this one, but it certainly is a fun exercise in futility.
Of the 64 movies listed, here are the 32 that made it past my first round:
EAST REGION
Star Wars
The Incredibles
Moon
Alien
12 Monkeys
Terminator 2
District 9
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
WEST REGION
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Fifth Element
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Inception
Aliens
The Dark Knight
The Matrix
The Empire Strikes Back
SOUTHWEST REGION
E.T.
Spider-Man
Total Recall
Back to the Future
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Galaxy Quest
Sunshine
Wall-E
SOUTHEAST REGION
Blade Runner
A Clockwork Orange
Predator
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Road Warrior
Metropolis
Children of Men
The Thing
After an intense two-day battle, the field was winnowed down to this oh-so Sweet Sixteen:
Star Wars
Alien
Terminator 2
District 9
2001: A Space Odyssey
Inception
Aliens
The Empire Strikes Bak
E.T.
Back to the Future
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Wall-E
Blade Runner
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Road Warrior
Children of Men
And from there, the field was further winnowed down to the Elite Eight:
Alien
Terminator 2
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Empire Strikes Back
Back to the Future
Wall-E
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Children of Men
It was a tough battle, but when all was said and done, the Final Four were:
Alien
The Empire Strikes Back
Back to the Future
Children of Men
And your championship contenders:
The Empire Strikes Back
Back to the Future
Without further adieu, I give you THE GREATEST SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE EVER MADE:
The Empire Strikes Back

  • I have to believe that Back to the Future got lucky with a weak bracket and was seeded way to high. But a nice run. Hopefully Butler wins this weekend buddy

  • The Empire Strikes Back is without a doubt the greatest Sci Fi movie ever.

  • In reply to cesba:

    I second that!

  • In reply to cesba:

    I also loved Blade Runnner

  • In reply to cesba:

2001 is an excellent choice. Objectively speaking, and based on how it has influenced the genre, I think the case can be made that 2001 is the greatest sci-fi film. But it's hard to deny the everlasting appeal of Empire.

Blade Runner is also a great one. I'm sure that would have made many others' final four over Children of Men. I can't really argue against it - I just personally prefer Children of Men to it.

  • In reply to cesba:

The toughest choice for me was Aliens going up against Empire. I love me some Aliens - more than Ridley Scott's original.

  • In reply to cesba:

I'd take TOTAL RECALL over BACK TO THE FUTURE. TOTAL RECALL is about the only Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that I really like, especially among his action movies. Way better than the overrated TERMINATOR.

  • In reply to cesba:

Not a bad list, but I would amend it by removing a few items--namely the superhero movies ("The Incredibles" and "The Dark Knight")--and replacing them with a few other legitimate sci-fi films.

I would've added "Logan's Run", "Donnie Darko", "Dark City", "The Blob" (either version), "They Live", and "The Fly" (the remake from the '80s).

  • You can have "The Empire Strikes Back" as the greatest sci-fi movie ever made, if you like (though it's much more fantasy than sci-fi) but "2001: A Space Odyssey" remains the greatest movie ever made!
