TV Review - 'Mr. Sunshine'

The Premise: The show follows the exploits of Ben (Matthew Perry) and his boss (Allison Janney) at a large sports arena named Sunshine Stadium.
The Good: It's rare that I actually laugh out loud during a pilot episode, but laugh I did.  Not once, but several times.  The cast is quite good.  If this show survives, expect to see Perry (and Janney, of course) nominated for an Emmy next year.  It's so great to see him and Janney and Jorge Garcia back on the small screen.
The Bad: I am concerned for this show because it also features known TV show killer Andrea Anders.  She's a failed sitcom magnet.  She's fine on this show; she just has the kind of Midas touch that turns every show she touches to crap.
The Awesome: There is a character on this show named Bobert.  Bobert!  (Yeah, probably only some of my college friends will care about that fact.)
The Verdict: Watch this show.  It's on after Modern Family (taking over Cougar Town's spot on ABC for the time being), so you don't even have to change the channel, Mom.

  • I agree - Matthew Perry may still be channeling some Chandler Bing mannerisms, but darn it if his comic timing and delivery aren't brilliant. He turns even the most mundane line reading into comic gold. I think we'll continue to get good performances out of him because he co-created the show, so he's invested in it. Janney's character's casual racist remarks are very funny. The stadium setting offers the chance for a variety of different storylines. This could be one of the good ones. Make Jorge Garcia a series regular, and we'll be set.

I agree with all of the above. Also, I just want to pray to the gods of TV pilots that this show doesn't pull a Studio 60 on us. Matthew Perry needs to be on my TV screen. I have felt this way since he guest starred on my favorite Thank Goodness It's Funny show, 'Just the 10 of Us.'

  • I love comedy series and this show is so hilarious. Full of entertainment. Thanks.
