Movie Essentials: Best Actress Nominees 2010

Oscar-nominations-announced.jpg

In past years, the Academy was hard-pressed to find five leading actress roles worthy of a nomination.  That's not a knock against women or the actresses themselves, it just means that Hollywood regularly neglects films with strong, interesting women at the center.  Thankfully, that's not the case this year.  All five nominees were given a chance to shine front and center, in movies practically built around them.  At this point, it seems that the nominees can be divided into two groups: Natalie Portman, and, well, everybody else.  I've been working my way through the Portman filmography over the past few weeks in honor of her work in Black Swan, and it's been fun re-discovering her talent as an actress.  Here are her (and the other nominees') Essentials:

  • She was the poo in V for Vendetta. I love Natalie Portman!!!!!!!

Yes - loved V for Vendetta, but was trying to be objective... Also - this is more their individual performance than the movie itself, otherwise Heat definitely would have made this list also.

  • Question. Can someone explain to me exactly why a best actress Oscar is "owed" to Annette Bening? It's not like she's Paul Newman or somebody. She's made a few OK movies and she's married to a big star. That's about it.

  • In reply to Magistra:

I don't get it either. She's good but her not winning an Oscar is certainly no travesty.

  • Great article, John. That is all.

This is a very fine comment, indeed.
