Movie Essentials: 2009

If you can remember all the way back to last year, then you'll know that 2009 saw the rise of the Swine Flu.  Michael Jackson passed away in June (the same day as Farrah Fawcett).  Balloon Boy pulled a fast one on media outlets everywhere.  Bill Clinton met with Kim Jong-Il in North Korea to arrange the pardon of two American journalists.  Chicago lost its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.  Susan Boyle was a viral sensation and nearly saved the recording industry when her I Dreamed a Dream album sold like hotcakes over the holidays.  The Black Eyed Peas became ubiquitous with inescapable hits like "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling."  On TV, Jimmy Fallon took over Late Night from Conan O'Brien.  As for Conan, well, that's a story for 2010....

The movies of 2009 were an interesting lot.   Sandra Bullock had a stellar year, career-wise, even if the movies she made (The Proposal, The Blind Side, All About Steve) all sucked.  Paranormal Activity broke out in a big way, single-handedly putting the nail in the Saw franchise's coffin in October.  Michael Jackson was just as big on screen as off - his This Is It documentary did mad business for a concert film.

Honorable mention goes to Fantastic Mr. Fox and I Love You, Man.  Other notable titles include Sherlock Holmes, It's Complicated, New Moon, Bruno, Funny People, Taken, Watchmen, He's Just Not That Into You, Adventureland, State of Play, Fast & Furious, Drag Me to Hell, Away We Go, Where the Wild Things Are, Julie and Julia, G.I. Joe, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Couples Retreat, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.  And here are your Essentials:

  • I know you kind of HAVE to have 'Avatar' on there, but I really despise that movie.

I also want to restate my position that Jeremy Renner should be in every movie for the rest of time, and he deserves to be considered for a Best Supporting Actor nod for his role in 'The Town.'

  • This is the first time I've seen EVERY movie on the list! And I approve of the picks - but only because I can't see how you can omit Avatar. Wish it were possible, can't be done.
