Golden Globes Nominees - TV

Mad Men - Don, Pete, Roger

Hear ye!  Hear ye!  The nominees for the most overrated awards show since the last awards show have just been announced.  Here are your Golden Globe TV nominees (and a few reactions):

Best TV Series -- Drama
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men
The Walking Dead

Yikes. I am definitely on board with Mad Men in this category.  However, while the pilots of both Boardwalk Empire and The Walking Dead were stellar, their complete seasons were a bit hit and miss.

Notable Snubs: Breaking Bad, Fringe, LOST, and (oddly) Grey's Anatomy

Best TV Series -- Musical or Comedy
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
The Big C
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie

Not having Showtime, I'm unfamiliar with the comedic quality of either The Big C or Nurse Jackie.  However, I do know for a fact that Glee is utter crap.  30 Rock deserves the win after its stellar half season this year.

Notable Snubs: Parks & Recreation, Entourage (actually deserves some love this year), It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Community

Best Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie
Carlos
The Pacific
The Pillars of the Earth
Temple Grandin
You Don't Know Jack

This is 100% between The Pacific and Temple Grandin.  Thanks for playing, the rest of you.  Temple Grandin has the edge, post-Emmys.

Best Actor -- Drama
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House M.D.

Steve Buscemi is kind of the weakest part of Boardwalk Empire for me.  I love him in so many other roles, but he feels really miscast here.  The rest of these guys can stay.  I'd give Jon Hamm the edge this year after a stellar season of Mad Men, especially for him.

Notable Snubs: Matthew Fox, LOST

Best Actress -- Drama
Elizabeth Moss, Mad Men
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Piper Perabo, Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal, Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Yay for Elizabeth Moss, who earned the Best Actress right this year.  She was fantastic on this season of Mad Men.

Notable Snubs: Uh...hmm...What other lead drama actresses are there?  Anna Torv for Fringe?  Anna Paquin for True Blood?

Best Actor -- Musical or Comedy
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Thomas Jane, Hung
Matthew Morrison, Glee
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Thoery

Matthew Morrison sucks as hard as his show does.  I'm a fan of the Parsons, but he's won his Emmy, so let's move on, maybe.  This is kind of a hard category.  There are so many ensemble comedies, it's hard to think of a true series lead anymore that's not Charlie Sheen or William Shatner.  Gross.

Notable Snubs: Ed O'Neill, Modern Family.  He holds that show together.

Best Actress -- Musical or Comedy
Toni Collette, United States of Tara
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Lea Michele, Glee

I can't even with Lea Michele.

Notable Snubs: Amy Pohler, Parks & Recreation

Best Actor -- Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie
Idris Elba, Luther
Ian McShane, Pillars of the Earth
Al Pacino, You Don't Know Jack
Dennis Quaid, The Special Relationship
Edgar Ramirez, Carlos

Uh...sure.  I'm rooting for Idris Elba based on The The Wire Principle.

Best Actress -- Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie
Hayley Atwell, Pillars of the Earth
Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
Judi Dench, Return to Cranford
Romola Garai, Emma
Jennifer Love Hewitt, The Client List

This award belongs to Claire Danes.  The rest of you, it's an honor to be nominated.  Also, J-Lo-Hew, it's an honor anyone remembers you exist.

Best Supporting Actor in TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV Movie
Scott Caan, Hawaii Five-0
Chris Colfer, Glee
Chris Noth, The Good Wife
David Strathairn, Temple Grandin
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family

I despise how the Globes do the supporting actor and actress categories.  Combining all supporting players across all genres is just tomfoolery.  At least give us ten nominees then.  I'm basically behind none of these nominations.  Scott Caan?  Really?  For that show?  He's fine on it, but it's not like he's stretching himself at all.  Eric Stonestreet is good on Modern Family, but he just won the Emmy, so let's spread the wealth.  Chris Colfer is America's current sweetheart, but I'm not the biggest fan of his work on Glee.  Or Glee period, for that matter.

Notable Snubs: John Noble, Fringe (He plays both Walter and Walternate with equal aplomb); Donald Glover or Danny Pudi, Community; Aziz Ansari, Chris Pratt, Nick Offerman (All from Parks & Rec); Josh Halloway, LOST; Michael Pitt, Boardwalk Empire; Nelsan Ellis, True Blood; Charlie Day, It's Always Sunny; Tracy Morgan, 30 Rock; Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad; Garrett Dillahunt, Raising Hope

Best Supporting Actress in TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV Movie
Hope Davis, The Special Relationship
Jane Lynch, Glee
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Julia Stiles, Dexter
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

Same problems here.  This category is ridiculous.  And I hate it that I'm starting to abhor seeing Jane Lynch's name on these lists.

Notable Snubs: Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock; Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy (She actually deserves it this year); Julie Bowen, Modern Family; Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope; Khandi Alexander, Treme

How do you feel about the Golden Globes TV nominations?  What do you think are the most egregious snubs?

  • I never understand the Golden Globe Awards, why was Scott Caan nominated and not Alex O'loughlin? Alex is the main actor in the series and a much better actor and more popular with the fans and he gets snubbed. Doesn't make sense.

  • In reply to candysue27:

My guess would be something along the lines of Scott Caan is Hollywood royalty and that makes them more apt to nominate him (as you can tell by all the Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie love, the HFPA loves themselves some stars). Plus, he has a more memorable, comedic role. Also, the Best Actor category was pretty tough to break into this year.

How Caan bested the other Supporting Actor also-rans is beyond me.

  • In reply to Magistra:

I agree with you,I guess Scott Caan is Hollywood Royalty, being James Caan's Son. I also don't understand him getting a nomination for Supporting Actor. I am a loyal Alex O'Loughlin fan so I guess that is another reason I was peeved that he didn't get a nomination, but as you said Best Actor category was tough to break this year.
