TV Review - 'Raising Hope' and 'Running Wilde'

Good news, America!  Outlaw is no longer the funniest new comedy of the season!  That distinction belongs to...

Raising Hope - FOX (Tuesday 8 PM)
...Raising Hope.
The Good: The cast is fabulous (Yay, Martha Plimpton! Always good to see a Goonie getting work).  The jokes are edgy and fresh.  But it's not cynical.  There's a lot of heart in this show, which is not too surprising considering it was created by Greg Garcia, who was also in charge of My Name is Earl.
The Bad: Even in the cold light of day, I'm having a hard time thinking of a single negative thing to say about this show.
The Verdict: Set your DVR on "Season Pass" now.  I really hope people find this show.  If you like Modern Family, you will like this show.  So just watch it, Mom.
Now as far as disappointments go...
...Running Wilde was not the Arrested Development reunion anyone was looking for.
Running Wilde - FOX (Tuesday 8:30 PM)
The Good: It's always good to see Will Arnett, Keri Russell, and David Cross, no matter the material.
The Bad: I'm going to give this show the shot it deserves based on the talent involved (I stuck with Community all last year, despite a very lackluster first half of the season, and that paid off in spades), but I don't know if the rest of America will.  If people didn't like Arrested Development, then there's no way they're going to like this show.  Even I don't like this show.
I don't think I laughed once.  :(
I'm not even sure what it is that's wrong with this show.  Maybe it just needs to find its rhythm and footing.  Maybe the premise (a billionaire tries to reconnect with his activist ex-girlfriend) just doesn't work.  Maybe it will be cancelled by November.  I don't know.
The Verdict: Skip it for now.  I'll let you know if it improves.

  • Both on the DVR...bummer about the Felicity/Job show...had high hopes for that one! Maybe it will ramp up. I hated Scrubs at first but ended up loving that show (except that horrid last season). Can't wait to watch Raising Hope!
