Third place:  Picks & Ponderings: Magna Fortuna: A culmination and a cause
Why:  Perhaps the most beautifully-written post in December, the story of a foal's journey from a kill pen to racing unfolds  effortlessly before you. I don't often read about horse racing, but this post had me rapt throughout.

Second place: Going for Gusto:  Python Hunting in Florida: 5 reasons it's a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad idea
Why: This post about the folly of hunting pythons in Florida had me laughing the whole way. It's everything a blog post should be: random, ridiculous, casual, hilarious. It feels less like a blog post than a commentary with a buddy about an inane idea seen on tv. Posts like this are the reason blogs exist.

First place: Trans Girl at the Cross: Transgender Woman: a lifelong pictorial
Why: It would be easier to list the reasons why not. For bravery. For humor. For wisdom. For laying one's soul bare for the sake of a  better understanding of our differences. For teaching. For delving back into those awkward years that are painful for even those of us with the most idyllic childhoods.  For fearlessness. For the yellow pants.
