YouTube and 2013: The year of the fox, Harlem Shake and a doozy of a wrecking ball

I spent most of the morning trying to come up with my top 5 YouTube videos of 2013 to no avail. So many choices. So many categories. Did I want to go with the trendy such as What Does the Fox Say and Harlem Shake? Did I want to go with the cutest baby panda and cat videos I could find? Did I want to focus on the music videos, which seemed to get stranger and stranger as the year went on?

I just couldn't decide. And then I found the above gem of a video created by none another than the great YouTube itself and I had a revelation. YouTube could just do my work for me. And, wow, did they. The above video represents all that YouTube was in 2013, which – as in turns out – was a giant David Lynch movie played out over a year on a website.

Costumed characters, strange dancing, no plot line. Yes, YouTube's 2013 most certainly was a David Lynch movie.

And what a wonderful thing that it was. I enjoyed every stinkin' minute of it. I'm consistently amazed by the talented people I find on YouTube who – many on their own dime – create such creative and entertaining videos. And, yes, that includes you, Mr. Hillbilly Dance With a Raccoon Guy.

So, here's to 2014, YouTube, you sultry siren of the interwebs. May you be just as strange and delightful as ever.
