Matthew 7:13-14 Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Once a month, the bloggers at ChicagoNow are given a challenge. We are given a topic and then told to write and post it within an hour of given the topic. The topic for this month is “You made a million choices in 2015. Write about one of them.”
Being a 47 year old full time firefighter who is happily married to a full time schoolteacher and is also my best friend, and with 4 kids age 16, 7, 7, and 4, opens up the possibilities of a million daily choices.
I could focus on choosing to wait on signing up for another Ironman. I could write about not engaging in debates on Facebook. I could open myself up to write about the choice to walk away from some unhealthy relationships.
Instead of writing about those things, I need to focus on something bigger. It’s something that I have been trying to do daily and when I do it, things always turn out ok.
I make the choice daily to trust God!
I became a follower of Jesus Christ in 2005. It took a brain tumor, colon cancer, and a divorce to open my eyes to the bigger picture going on. Here is my testimony that was shown at my church in 2008.
The years that followed making that decision were filled with ups and downs but mostly ups. It’s really easy to get caught up in this crazy world that we live in. Flights get delayed, people get sick, houses need repair, and the list goes on and on.
Whenever I try to do things on my own strength, I get anxious and worry. If I take a step back and realize that God has it covered already, I tend to relax and not freak out as much. Notice I say “as much” because there are plenty of times that I just can’t seem to hand over my imaginary sense of control that I think I have.
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
God truly is faithful! When I am tempted with choices that I know are not good for me and could possibly lead to horrible consequences, God always provides an out for me. There’s always a choice to be made. As my pastor always says, “Choose to sin, choose to suffer” and follows that up with “When God says don’t, He means don’t hurt yourself”.
Choosing to follow God’s Word is not always easy but it is always comforting for me to know that He is there to help me make the right choice.
Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
