What If Tomorrow Never Comes? 5 Steps To A Better Today

I am the king of “tomorrow”.  “I’ll start the diet tomorrow”, “I’ll pray more starting tomorrow”, “I will spend more time off my phone tomorrow”, “I’ll work out more tomorrow”. “I’ll be a better parent/wife/husband tomorrow”.

For a lot of people, ending a sentence with tomorrow is second nature. It became so habitual that we actually mean it when we say it. We may have even followed through with those tomorrow promises sometimes.

The problem with this mindset is that tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. I wrote about this a while ago Tomorrow Is Promised To No One.

Still I struggle with looking to improve on things starting tomorrow rather than today.

The Bible is very clear on this topic.

Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

James 4:14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring

I could go on and on about how tomorrow never comes and how we need to act on things today. But what about carrying burdens and stress? Why do we continually struggle to humble ourselves and let God carry our burdens? These are the things that will continually keep tomorrow at the end of our sentences. They are the thoughts that kill our dreams, fill our head with negativity and keep us from the joy that comes with a relationship with God.

Here are 5 ways to let go of our burdens and stress.

1-Start the day in prayer with God

1 Chronicles 16:11 Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!

God wants us to talk to Him just like we want our kids to talk to us. That’s how we have a relationship with Him. He didn’t design us to carry these burdens, He wants us to give it to Him. Start your day with prayer and tell God of your needs.

2-Confess our sins

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I have heard a million times that all secrets come out at some point and I have found that to be true. Start by telling God your burdens and what you need to repent of. Just like a good parent, He already knows.

3-Be humble

James 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Nothing will bring out more peace and in your life then just being humble. Be honest, loving, caring, and put other people’s needs first as Jesus has done for us.

4-Forgive

Mark 11:25 “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

This is a tough one at times. We need to truly forgive people who wronged us even when they aren’t sorry or asking for forgiveness. We also need to be truly apologetic and extend the same grace that we would like for ourselves.

5-Set up an accountability system

Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.

In order to stay on a godly walk, we need help. Get someone to help you. Someone that you can be completely honest with, and will be the same back to you. Someone that will ask you the hard questions of what you are doing in your life.

I know it seems simple when you look at a list like this, and I struggle with this too, but I am going to do better today. I am not going to wait till tomorrow.
