My Chemotherapy Song

So it’s March and that means it’s Colon Cancer Awareness month. Not that I needed a specific month to think about cancer but this particular month I am thinking about my cancer specifically, colon cancer.

There are so many things that stand out in my cancer journey. Some certainly stand out more than others. One thing that I think of often is the car ride back and forth to get chemotherapy.

When I got treatment, I had to drive to the cancer center every day for 5 days to get chemotherapy for about 3 hours. The good part of that is it was followed with 3 weeks of no treatment. The bad part is that I was very sick for the better part of those 3 weeks. I usually got better just in time to go back and get started on treatment again.

Now in 2002, the iPod didn’t exist yet, nor did iTunes. What did exist was the capability to download music from various websites, all in the name of “sharing music”. From there, we could then take the shared music and burn CD’s to play in the car.

I remember my friend Richard asked me if he could do anything so I asked him to make me a CD with certain songs on it. Some of the songs were loud fast songs and some were slow sappy songs. I remember listening to this CD on the way to and from chemotherapy. It was very comforting to me to listen to these songs. Sometimes, I would pull over and just cry when I would think about the enormity of what was going on.

The one song that stands out the most from that CD is George Harrison’s “Here Comes The Sun”. To this day, I get teary listening to any version of this song. I especially like this one.

"Here Comes The Sun" by George Harrison

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes x 5
Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
It's all right, it's all right

I will always be grateful for this song that helped me through so many dark, dark moments. I am grateful to George Harrison for writing such a beautiful song. George’s life was cut short from cancer. Thank you George for helping me see the sun and letting me know that it truly is “all right”.
