One of the greatest challenges I face in my life is to live by “faith” and not by “fear”. Having a brain tumor at 28 and stage 3 colon cancer at age 33 can make even that decision even harder. I know that the results of both of those medical issues were good and I have been cancer free for 11 years now. Still there is something about any situation, whether it’s physical, spiritual, relational, financial, parental, or anything else, my initial reaction is fear. I know that isn’t the best place to go, but that is my initial reaction.
2 Timothy 1:7 “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
I have learned to not stay in that fear place for long. God always has a plan. In all of the times, when I walked in fear, God was there to rescue me and to show me the way. I should say that I have a system in place that takes me out of my fear and into my faith. It’s not a very complex system and I believe that anyone can apply it.
I surround myself with people that live in faith and not fear.
Not all of the people in my life go with this concept but I could pretty much guarantee that if they are in my inner circle, they live by faith and not fear. The person that applies this theory the most is my wife, Amy. Her faith is amazing. Whenever I start to slide down that slippery path of fear, she will somehow manage to spin it and say something to get me back on the faith train. I am truly blessed to be married to such a Godly woman who encourages me and my faith so much. She makes me a better husband and father by supporting my walk with Christ.
I spend time daily in God’s Word
I have a Bible App on my phone along with several actual Bibles. Getting into God’s Word gives me access to faith building scripture verses that will help when I start to give in to fear. Whatever it takes to get into God’s Word, do it. I like this website a lot as it helps me find scripture verses sometimes in a certain subject area.
I go to a Bible teaching Church every week and I am in a small group.
I can’t stress enough how much this helps. Being in fellowship every week with other believers, helps me stay on my walk with Christ. Being in a small group helps me be in accountability with other Christian men and to also dig deeper into God’s Word. I love our church family. I met my wife at this church. It’s not a perfect church but it’s a great church. If you don’t go to a church now, please let me know. I would love to take you to a service at Harvest. You won’t regret it.
Hebrews 10:25 “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
It really is that simple. I know that there will be times in the future when I start to fear about my kids, or my health or money or a host of other things. I need to remember to live by faith and not by sight.
“When you have come to the edge of all the light you have and step into the darkness of the unknown, believe that one of the two will happen to you. Either you'll find something solid to stand on or you'll be taught how to fly!”- Richard Bach
Romans 8:25 “But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”
