It's early. But things are going well for two key young Cubs.
In Iowa, 3B Josh Vitters already has three walks in six games, a 12.5% BB rate (24 PA). His career BB rate is around 4%. He has more walks so far than strikeouts (two).
Jeff Samardzija did not walk any batters in his first start this season. This spring, he walked just one — against 16 Ks. His last three Spring Traning K/BB ratios: 14/7, 9/5, 12/5.
Vitters has always been said to have a sweet swing, but his problem offensively has always been an inability to lay off pitches outside the zone. Jeff Samardzija has always had a fabulous fastball, but he could never throw his secondary pitches for strikes. If both of those things remain changed over the next two to three months, the Cubs' minor league system instantly looks much, much better.
