Who did Hendry sign that Theo wouldn't touch with a 10' pole?

Some candidates:

Jeromy Burnitz
Scott Eyre
John Grabow
Henry Blanco
Koyie Hill
Daryle Ward
Jason Marquis
Jon Lieber (part two)
Jacque Jones
Neifi Perez
Cesar Izturis - no wait, Hendry traded for him, giving up Greg Maddux

Anyone else you can think of that should be on this list?

  • (1) I didn't know that Epstein had the combo of Pierzynski and Rzepczynski, which together would get you 10 feet.

    (2) With the press conference talk about "past prime" free agents, why doesn't Soriano make the list? At least Z's last contract was a home grown disaster. Hendry must have known about the stuff Soriano was pulling in D.C. (where the team is apparently the Walgreens, as pointed out by Brenly).

  • (1) What?

    (2) In general, true. But to your parenthetical note: What?

  • In reply to ajwalsh08:

    (1) See the last number and word in your headline.

    (2) Brenly did say that the hats and logos in the park in D.C. did remind him that he has to pick some some personal care products. Personally, I can't figure out why some Nats uniforms have a DC logo and others the W logo, which sure looks like that of a certain purveyor of such products--Walgreens.

    (1) I get it!!

    (2) I'd never heard that story before, nice!

  • Koyie Hill

  • In reply to lokeey:

He's on there, but at the same time, definitely worth mentioning twice.

  • How soon they forget.

    Milton Bradley.

  • In reply to Rob Letterly:

This is an interesting case. I actually think Theo would maybe have gotten on the phone with ol' Milt, but he wouldn't have paid $30 million over three years for him. In contrast, I can't see Theo even bothering to give the time of day to John Grabow or his agent.

  • In reply to Rob Letterly:

So obvious that he hid in plain sight.

That got me to thinking Todd Hundley. I don't know how he was acquired by the Cubs, but, as in the case of Milton, Hendry later took credit for unloading him.

  • Kosuke Fukudome.
    Ramon Ortiz
    Wade Miller
    Rodrigo Lopez
    Doug Davis
    Joey Gathright
    Aaron Miles
    Ryan Freel

  • In reply to Rob Letterly:

    Freel!

I wonder about Kosuke too. I feel like other teams were in on him, but once again, the Cubs paid way more than any other team was willing to commit, I think.

  • In reply to ajwalsh08:

There were all the reports that the CWS offered him more, but playing at Wrigley was a more appealing proposition.

  • In reply to ajwalsh08:

You also have to figure that during Epstein's tenure, Boston paid $50 million to a Japanese club for the rights to talk to Daisuke Matsuzaka, plus $50 million to DaisK himself, during the height of Japan fever. Of course, he was on the 2007 winning World Series roster.

  • Oh oh, Aaron Miles!

  • Can't put Izturis for Maddux on the list because Hendry did him a favor and traded him to a West Coast team that was in contention for the playoffs.

  • Michael Barrett
    Jacque Jones
    Bob Howry
    John Mabry
    Wade Miller
    Alfonso Soriano
    Cliff Floyd
    Will Ohman
    Neal Cotts
    Chad Fox
    Kevin Gregg (Trade)
    Aaron Miles
    Joey Gathright
    Milton Bradley
    Chad Tracy
    Xavier Nady
    Ramon Ortiz

  • Any post that can simultaneously get in a few last licks on the disaster that was the Jim Hendry era (error?) while backhanded praising Theo is ok with me.
