It's the Great Pumpkin Latte, Charlie Brown

With leaves changing color, crisper air, and the excitement of Halloween around the corner, there is no doubt fall is upon us. Two things I look forward to each fall are eating anything made with pumpkin and watching "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown". In case you are wondering, it's airing Thursday, October 28th at 8/7pm central on ABC.

My husband hails from "The Pumpkin Capital of the World" (Morton, IL), so over the years we have eaten a variety of pumpkin-laden foods: pumpkin pie, pumpkin chili, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin pork chops, pumpkin doughnuts...the list goes on. One of my fall favorites is the pumpkin latte.

I am a daily coffee drinker (usually a half caff with a splash of almond milk), but I like to indulge myself every now and again. In honor of fall, many of the commercial coffee chains are now offering up their spiced pumpkin coffee delights. I recently contacted three of the major coffee chains about the ingredients in their pumpkin-flavored coffee drinks and received the following information regarding gluten:

Starbucks:  They confirm that there are no gluten ingredients in their pumpkin latte, however added processing could create cross-contamination (from their distributor). Their pumpkin latte can be made dairy free as well by substituting soy milk (offered at all locations).

Caribou Coffee: All coffee drinks, including the pumpkin latte, are gluten free with the exception of their drinks containing cookie crumbles. Their pumpkin latte can be made dairy free as well by substituting soy milk (offered at all locations).

Dunkin Donuts: All their coffee beverages are gluten free, including their pumpkin latte. Their pumpkin latte can be made dairy free as well by substituting soy milk (offered at some locations).

If you'd rather not leave the comfort of your kitchen in the morning and want to save a few bucks (and calories), try this recipe for a do-it-yourself pumpkin spiced latte. I will be enjoying mine, along with some gluten free pumpkin bread slathered with pumpkin butter, while watching Linus and Charlie commiserate about spending an all-nighter in a pumpkin patch and getting nothing but rocks for treats.

Pumpkin Spiced Latte (Gluten and Dairy Free)

2 tablespoons Canned Pumpkin (Libby's is gluten free and made in Morton - yeah!)
1/4 cup Silk Vanilla Almond Milk
2 tbsp Silk Non-Dairy Creamer
1/8 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice
1 cup brewed coffee

Combine all ingredients into microwave safe container and gently whisk until combined. Heat in microwave 30 sec-1 minute or until very warm. Transfer liquid to blender and blend 30 seconds, to achieve frothiness. Pour into 2 small coffee cups or 1 large coffee mug and enjoy!

This is actually false (unfortunately). I have severe gluten and dairy food allergies (and have had to use epi because of both).

First of all, Starbucks pumpkin latte mix actually contains a derivative of dairy so it is absolutely UNSAFE for anyone with a dairy allergy. As *most* pumpkin latte flavors

Second of all, dunkin donuts is also UNSAFE for gluten and dairy allergies per their representative due to cross contamination, even their unflavored can elicit a reaction.

I've been looking for legitimate gluten free pumpkin flavored coffee's but unfortunately most are made with butter and are thus not dairy free or have cross contamination issues or malt derivatives.

I've done extensive research and have written both companies myself as well as read the same response other people have received.
