I am always on the lookout for food that is nutritious, filling, and portable. I often find myself on the run (literally and figuratively) or in traffic somewhere far, far away from my pantry when hunger strikes. Enter the energy bar.
There are many energy bars on the market, but few that can say they are gluten free and even fewer that are both dairy and gluten free. I recently received some samples from LUNA of their new, gluten free product offering - LUNA Protein. LUNA is an offshoot of the CLIF bar company and focuses on nutrition bars geared towards women's nutritional needs. I love that. There are six varieties of LUNA Protein bars: Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cookie Dough, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Cherry Almond.
While I could not indulge due to my dairy allergy (whey protein is an ingredient), I put the LUNA bars to the test using a panel of 4 tiny but discriminating palettes and 1 adult. Only 1 of the five is on a gluten free diet, but comments ranged from "awesome" for the Chocolate and Peanut Butter bar, to "chewy-nice taste of mint" for the Mint Chocolate Chip bar. Although the taster felt the Cookie Dough bar did not taste exactly like cookie dough, she did enjoy the "little crunch, yummy chocolate chips" and most importantly "no weird aftertaste" than comes with so many energy bars.
With all varieties under 200 calories with 12 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber, you get a nutritious and yummy bang for your calorie buck. So, grab a few to keep handy in your gym bag or purse!
